A month after losing in the final of Wimbledon to Andy Murray, Murray defeated Roger Federer, the Wimbledon champion, to capture an Olympic gold medal. It was a huge victory for the Scottish Murray. Murray, who won the gold for Great Britain, soundly defeated Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4. Federer may have been tired following a 19-17 third set victory for Federer against Juan Martin del Potro. Murray has been playing very well as of later and the win is huge for both Murray and Great Britain.
Murray did not have to deal with Rafael Nadal, who pulled out of the Olympics due to an injury. In spite of this, Murray defeated both Federer and Novak Djokovic to win the gold medal.
Federer went on to win the silver medal, while del Potro won the bronze with a straight set win over Djokovic. Murray also went on to win a silver medal in the mixed doubles with Laura Robson. Murray will certainly be considered a favorite for this month's U.S. Open.
