2012 –The Year to Volunteer!

The New Year is a time to reflect on the year past - the good and the bad; the lessons learned and the memories made. Based on our reflections, we may develop personal resolutions, often to lose or give up something. This year, we are asking you to gain – Recruit a friend to become an RSVP volunteer and be entered to win a Wegman’s gift basket!!

Many people would like to volunteer but have trouble getting started. Who needs their help? Who should they contact? Who will support their efforts? RSVP is the one-stop program that does this and more! Encourage your friends to try something new, give back and have fun while volunteering!

We are looking for volunteers 55 years of age or older to meet the many needs of our community in 6 focus areas - delivering services to veterans; assisting homeless families; helping those without access to adequate food; improving literacy levels;...(Read More)

University Express

This fall, Jeannette Ludwig (SUNY Buffalo) compared history and beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Laurie Buonanno (Buffalo State College) discussed how different fiscal policies and practices among European Union countries contributed to the debt crisis. Peter Galie (Canisius College) examined inefficiencies and excesses in NYS government and the potential for change through a Constitutional Convention. The instructors responded to questions from attentive students, all over the age of 55, and lively discussion followed. Each class was located in a senior center through RSVP’s University Express lifelong learning program.
University Express offers FREE academic classes for Erie County residents age 55+. Volunteer instructors are active and retired faculty and professionals who enjoy sharing their expertise with adult learners.
Initially 2 classes at 2 sites in Fall 2006,...(Read More)

Volunteering at the Airport

Volunteering at the Airport

At 5AM, when most of us are still asleep, Bill Hale has already travelled from his Lockport home to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BNIA). But he isn’t catching an early flight. He’s a BNIA Volunteer Hospitality Ambassador from 5am to noon, 4 days a week.
After retirement, Bill felt he was “wasting away.” While surfing the net, he found RSVP’s website. Based on his skills and interests, RSVP set him up to volunteer at BNIA. It turned out to be a perfect match. He began volunteering at BNIA in 2007—and already has contributed over 5,000 hours of service there!
Bill says: “I found what I was looking for at the airport --- a chance to talk to all kinds of people, and deal with challenges that come with that. I’ve helped passengers who spoke Chinese, Spanish, Italian, and many other languages. Surprisingly, the people he finds most difficult to understand...(Read More)

Special Delivery for Special Moms

Some very special new moms will receive an extra gift this year when they deliver their baby. Colorful quilts lovingly handcrafted by RSVP Sewers will be given to women veterans through the Women’s Primary Care Wellness Center at the VA Western New York Healthcare System.
The Wellness Center is currently serving 57 expectant mothers, and will present a quilt to celebrate the arrival of their newborns.
“It is a gesture to welcome the new family members and thank veterans for their military service”, said Jill LaMantia, the Women Veterans Program Manager for VA WNY. “We need to do a little something extra to show them how special they are.”
Did you know that of the 100,000 returning veterans in Erie County, approximately 3,000 are women? In the past 10 years, the number of women veterans in Erie County has increased by 83 percent! Women veterans returning home from duty...(Read More)

Warm Hearts Make Warm Hands

Warm Hearts Make Warm Hands

When the winter winds blow, Buffalo residents know the painful cold of uncovered ears and hands --- and the importance of a warm hat, scarf and gloves. Each year, RSVP volunteer knitters create and donate thousands of warm colorful mittens, hats, and scarves to reach people in need. This year, the Grand Island Golden Age Center knitters donated huge bags of their beautiful wares, as did RSVP volunteer Naomi Gworek and friends. RSVP helps to deliver these beautiful handmade items to local organizations that serve people in need. RSVP also supplies our knitters with skeins of yarn-- often donated by people cleaning out closets!
The following organizations send warm thanks to our volunteer knitters for warming hands, heads and hearts this winter with their generosity:

Buffalo City Mission/ Cornerstone Manor
• Buffalo Dream Center/ Boxes of Love (food and toys to needy families...(Read More)
