Jets Defeat Sabres in Overtime 2-1

Johnny Oduya scored 57 seconds into overtime Saturday night, lifting the Winnipeg Jets to a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. His wrist shot from the left circle beat Buffalo goalie Jhonas Enroth over his left shoulder. His goal came off a lead pass from Evander Kane after Buffalo's Tyler Myers gave up the puck in the neutral zone. Blake Wheeler also scored for Winnipeg, which snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-10-4 on the road. Ondrej Pavelec finished with 31 saves.

Tyler Myers scored for Buffalo, which fell to 1-3-2 in its past six and 2-6-2 in its past 10. Enroth stopped 39 shots, but is 1-6-3 in his past 10 decisions. Enroth has played well lately, but has not won in regulation in over a month. The Sabres, 11th place in the Eastern Conference, have been held to two goals or fewer in seven of their past nine games.

Buffalo's Ville Leino believed he scored the...(Read More)

Staal Leads Hurricanes Past Sabres

From Sabres Gameday; Written by Steve Dowling on 2012-03-29

The Buffalo Sabres continued their losing ways on the road by dropping a 4-2 game to the Carolina Hurricanes. Staal had a goal and two assists to lead the Hurricanes past the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 on Friday night. Chad LaRose scored the go-ahead goal with 11:50 left, Justin Faulk also scored and Brandon Sutter added an empty-net goal for the Hurricanes, who never trailed in winning for the fourth time in seven games.

The Hurricanes played a very strong game from start to finish which helped them earn points for the third time in four games, as they try to dig out of the Eastern Conference cellar. They moved two points behind Tampa Bay for fourth in the Southeast Division.

Now skating on a line with banger Tuomo Ruutu and Jussi Jokinen, he has three goals and four assists in that four-game span. That's after he managed no goals and just three assists in the nine games before that - including...(Read More)

Sabres Open New Year With Win Over Oilers

The Buffalo Sabres needed to start the year off on a high note and they did with a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Drew Stafford scored the go-ahead goal with 5:26 left and assisted on Nathan Gerbe's game-winner 2:04 later in the victory over the road-weary Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. The Sabres won for only the second time in eight games (2-5-1) and sixth time in 20 (6-10-4).

Stafford's three points against the Oilers matched his production - three assists - in his previous seven games. He helped spark an offense that had produced two or fewer goals in 13 of 20 games.

Stafford snapped a 2-2 tie by tapping a loose puck at the net that dribbled between goalie Nikolai Khabibulin's legs. Gerbe put the game away by streaking up the left side, cutting to the net and shoveling the puck just inside the right post. Jordan Leopold and captain Jason Pominville, who played despite...(Read More)

Sabres Downed by Senators in a Shootout

A New Year's Eve for the Sabres did not turn out as they wanted, even more so as they needed it to. After having two of his shots hit the post, rookie forward Bobby Butler scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout in a 3-2 win Saturday night over the slumping Buffalo Sabres, who fell to 1-5-1 in their past seven games. The Senators improved to 5-1-1 in their past seven games by essentially ringing in the new year in a game in which they unofficially hit six posts.

Chris Neil and Matt Carkner scored and Erik Condra had two assists for the Senators. Brad Boyes and Paul Gaustad scored and Jordan Leopold had two assists for Buffalo. Enroth was by far the busiest goalie in stopping 44 shots, including getting his shoulder up to get a piece of Jason Spezza's snap shot from in close with 12 seconds left in overtime. Enroth is now 0-4-1 in his past 5 starts.

After Boyes scored...(Read More)

Washington Defeats Sabres 3-1; Ehrhoff Injured

From Sabres Gameday; Written by Steve Dowling on 2012-03-22

The stars showed why Washington can be a very dangerous team. Alex Ovechkin scored a pair to grab the Washington Capitals lead in goals. Alexander Semin had another multipoint game. Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist. The Capitals went on defeat the Sabres 3-1, paying them back for the blowout weeks earlier.

To add salt to the wound, the Buffalo Sabres, already without their top defenseman Tyler Myers, suffered another major injury, likely losing high-priced defenseman Christian Ehrhoff for weeks. They were already without six injured players entering the game before Ehrhoff got into a fight with Troy Brouwer late in the first period. The loss was the Sabres 5th consecutive road loss.

One of Ovechkin's two goals was actually a pass attempt that got deflected into the net, but the Capitals captain has five goals in seven games, a further sign that he is emerging from the spotty...(Read More)
