APRIL 2012

Celebrate National Volunteer Week!

From RSVP Connections; Written by Carrie Smith on 2012-04-05
Celebrate National Volunteer Week!

Celebrate National Volunteer Week – by inspiring, recognizing and encouraging others to give back to our community! National Volunteer Week shines a spotlight on the power of volunteerism, demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we can meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. National Volunteer Week is about taking action, encouraging individuals to be at the center of social change.

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week has grown each year, drawing the endorsement of all subsequent U.S. presidents, governors, mayors and other elected officials.

If you read the Buffalo News on Friday, March 30, you may have seen a lovely editorial in the Opinion section by Robert Lewandowski, a retired Buffalo School teacher who volunteers through RSVP at Southside Elementary School. Without any persuasion, Robert was inspired to share his experience to inspire others....(Read More)

The Spring 2012 semester of University Express begins on April 23-- just a few weeks away! Hundreds of adults attend University Express classes each semester, giving rave reviews about the interest level, quality of the instructors, and the engaging discussion and questions from audiences. RSVP Volunteer Bunnies "Spring" into Action

Nate Drag, Volunteer Coordinator at the Botanical Gardens, put out a call for volunteer Easter Bunnies and Bunny Assistants and other volunteers to help out at the big Springtime Show. Several of our volunteers were happy to take on the challenge, and a few even donned furry white ears to spend a few hours among the daffodils and lilies, providing hospitality and joy for the thousands of Western New Yorkers who come to the show.

Our RSVP volunteers tell us what it’s like to become the Bunny…

Jan Sheridan --- Being the Easter Bunny at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Garden was great fun! The Garden supplied the costume. All I had to do was to try to see through the little eyes and get around on big feet! I received enough hugs and "high 5s" to last a lifetime! There's nothing to it: I never spoke and never had to smile since no one could see my face anyway. I just acted...(Read More)

And the Winner is....

And the Winner is....

In the spirit of National Volunteer Week, we would like to announce our “Recruit a Friend Contest” winner! When we rang in 2012, we kicked off the New Year with our first ever “Recruit a Friend Contest”. We challenged all our RSVP volunteers to inspire a friend, colleague, family member etc., to enroll in RSVP and commit to a volunteer opportunity. We want to thank all of you for speaking with others, coaxing them maybe, into a volunteer role! The words from your mouths is our best marketing tool and who else could advertise RSVP better than the actual volunteers who are out there, hands-on, performing vital services to our community?! You not only talk the talk, but you walk the walk. Thank you to all who participated and to everyone, for your service to Eire County and its communities.

Naomi Gworek, RSVP volunteer since 1998 and still trying new things! Way to go Naomi, keep...(Read More)

Celebrate Earth Day 2012 through Volunteering!

Happy Spring!
If you’re like me, then those unexpected weeks of warm weather in March really got you excited for the upcoming season! Around this time of year, I find myself awakening from a winter hibernation-like state and feeling inspired and motivated to get things done! I know, the garage needs cleaning, the windows a good washing and the garden needs to be tended to. But, don’t forget to put on your “to-do” list something else that needs to be done – supporting our community and helping others. Here are some great opportunities for you to express your concern for Planet Earth! Some are seasonal, such as the Garden Stewards needed at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, one-time events like Buffalo Niagara Riverkeepers Shoreline Sweep. Washing the windows can wait one more week!

Happy Volunteering!

Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is the only science-based, community focused,...(Read More)
