From Tennis Tribune; Written by Steve Dowling on 2012-07-08
Federer Wins 7th Wimbledon Championship

Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray Sunday to capture his 7th Wimbledon championship. The win gave Federer his 17th Grand Slam and vaulted him to number 1 in the world rankings. It also prevented Murray from becoming the first Britishman to win Wimbledon in nearly 80 years. Federer's win tied him with Pete Sampras for most Wimbledon championships in the open era.

Federer was able to defeat Murray in 4 sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Murray played extremely well the first 2 sets. He broke Federer to go up 5-4 in the first and served out the set, much to the crowd's pleasure. He had a break point in the second set which could have potentially given him a 2 set lead, but was unable to capitalize. Federer would go on to win the second set. There would then be a short rain delay and they closed the retractable roof.

After the delay, it was all Federer. While Murray played well and remained competitive,...(Read More)

Murray Makes History By Reaching Wimbledon Final

Andy Murray became the first Britishman to reach the Wimbledon final since Bunny Austin in 1938. He defeated Jo Wilfred Tsonga in 4 sets to advance to the final. He will meet Roger Federer in the final, who will be playing in his 8th Wimbledon final. Despite the popularity of Federer, Murray will be a huge fan favorite Sunday in the final.

The Scottish Murray beat Tsonga Friday to reach the Wimbledon final for the first time, winning 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Murray had lost in the semifinals at Wimbledon the last 3 seasons. This time, he did not have to contend with either Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer after Nadal was beaten earlier in the tournament.

Earlier in the day, the 16-time Grand Slam champion beat last year's winner Novak Djokovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 under the roof on Centre Court to reach a modern-era record eighth final. He is now one victory from equaling Pete...(Read More)

French Open Champions Out At Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova, both 2012 French Open champions, have been eliminated at Wimbledon. Both were among the heavy favorites to win on the grass courts. Both losses, especially Nadal, were huge upsets.

Nadal lost in the 2nd round at Wimbledon, losing to Lukas Rosol in 5 sets. Rosol is a journeyman. He is the same age as Nadal, however going into the match, Nadal had won 23 more matches this season than Rosol had won in his entire career. It was a tough loss for the 11 time Grand Slam champion. Rosol, who usual plays on the challenger tours, pulled what was probably one of the biggest upsets in history. He would go on to lose in the 3rd round in straight sets.

Sharapova, the number 1 female player in the world, lost in the 4th round to 15th seeded Sabine Lisicki. Sharapova, a former Wimbledon champion, will lose her number 1 ranking after the tournament.

Both Nadal and...(Read More)

Nadal Makes History With 7th French Open Title

Rafael Nadal won his 7th French Open this morning, defeating Novak Djokovic in 4 sets on the red clay of Roland Garros. Nadal won 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to break Bjorn Borg's record of 6 French Opens. Nadal also put a damper on Djokovic holding all 4 Grand Slams at one time. It was definitely history in the making.

The match was a back and forth affair that lasted 2 days due to rain. When the conditions were somewhat dry, Nadal dominated. He won the 1st set and was up in the 2nd set when the tournament officials called play due to rain. The players came out soon after and the same continued for a few games, with Nadal winning the 2nd set and going up a break at 2-0 in the 3rd set. It appeared to be over.

Djokovic came back, doing what maybe no one will ever do again. He won 8 straight games at the French Open against Nadal. That streak gave him the 3rd set and a 2-1 lead in the 3rd. Play...(Read More)

Maria Sharapova Cruises to French Open Title

Maria Sharapova cruised in the final of the 2012 French Open on her way to her fourth Grand Slam, giving her a career Grand Slam. The 21st seed, Italian Sara Errani did not have the power to keep up with Sharapova. Where Errani's touch and speed took over, Sharapova's power went beyond that. Sharapova won the match 6-3, 6-2 in just 89 minutes, dropping to her knees in happiness after the final point.

The 25 year old Russian joins Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, Margaret Court and Serena Williams as winners of the career Slam in the Open era. She'll return to the number 1 ranking on Monday for the first time since 2008.

"It probably is the most special moment in my career," Sharapova told NBC after the match. "When I looked at that trophy today, I never felt this happy. It's really incredible." This was the one tournament that most experts thought she...(Read More)
