Bear the Pit Bull/Plott Hound mix Saves 2 KidsWritten by Kristian George on 2012-01-10
It started out as a nice sunny day, not knowing that all hell was gonna break loose. Bear the 14 year old Pit Bull/Plott Hound mix started barking. He barked for awhile. My dad asked "I wonder what that dog is barking at." My mom says "he's probably just barking at a deer." A bout a few minutes later my dad looked over and seen a raccoon staggering towards the kids who were playing in the sand box. My dad noticed that there was something wrong with that raccoon. The raccoon wasn't showing any fear of the loud noise that the family or the dog was making. So my dad yelled to the kids "get your butts on the porch now!" My brother immediatly got up on to the porch without looking back but Tori how ever in confusion stopped and looked back then when she had seen what was going on she ran up on to the porch. The only thing that was separating the raccoon from the kids was the brush pile. The raccoon was about 5-10 feet from the two kids. Then Bear kept barking which drove the raccoon mad. The raccoon went charging at Bear, snarling and growling. Bear got ready by leaping about 4 feet back and waited just as the raccoon got there Bear dove on him. Bear locked a hold of it and shook him like a ragdoll then slammed him. Then the raccoon got up, leaped at Bear's throat and locked a hold of it with his teeth. Finally my dad went down there to help out the 14 year old dog. The raccoon lunged at my dad and Bear grabbed him and shook him like a ragdoll again but wouldnt let go until my dad grabbed it by it's tail and had a brick in his hand. My dad threw the coon to the ground and slammed the brick on his head. It really didn't phase the raccoon, except slowed him down. Then my dad stuck a pole through the raccoons stomach a few times, which blood flew all over my dad's jeans. My dad and Bear worked well as a team to kill off that monster. After the horror, me, Billy, my parents and my grandma had went to calm Bear down and praised him. We pet him until we noticed the weird saliva on him that we had touched. Then we realized that his throat has been bitten...the raccoon punctured right through. Bear died a hero on September 7th 2004 from rabies.
