On Wednesday, pilots from the Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association (SWAPA) picketed outside Dallas Love Field Airport to voice their displeasure over their current contract situation.
Pilots from Southwest Airlines have been working more than four years without a contract, and picketers gathered at the Texas airport to hold signs and inform fliers about the perceived injustices associated with the long labor relations battle.
SWAPA and Southwest Airlines have been in federal mediation since November 2014. Since the mediation began, Southwest executives have received nearly 50 percent in average raises and shareholders have received nearly $6 billion in stock buybacks. In the mean time, wages for the company’s pilots are well behind industry standard wages.

“We have 1,000 pilots here today to protest a protracted negotiation now approaching four-and-a-half years,” SWAPA President Captain Jon Weaks said in a statement. “The pilots of Southwest simply want to remain contractually on par with our fellow professional pilots at other companies. Management actions, however, continue to foster labor discord. We are truly saddened that our company has strayed so far from the people-focused roots that made it the success it is today.”
In addition to the SWAPA pilots, Southwest flight attendants, mechanics and pilots from other airlines have voiced their support of the pickets. For more information on SWAPA and their demonstrations, check out the organization’s official website.
