Prospect Series - Oliver Kylington, SWE
Oliver Kylington is an offensive-defenseman from Sweden that jumped into the Swedish Elite League at just 16 years old. Kylington is 6'0" and 185 pounds. He has points in 17 games on the season for Farjestads BK. Last year, he had 6 points in 32 games in the SEL, a great number for a 16 year old defenseman. This was after he was bumped out of the under 20 Swedish League, where he had 21 points in 21 games.
Kylington is a two-way defenseman with top-notch skating ability. Has excellent vision and playmaking skills from the backend. Courtesy of Bill Placzek at NHL Draft Site, Kylington is clearly one of the top end elite skaters and puck movers in the class. Has the ability to play in tight space and control the puck and play. Plays like he knows he has more ability than the rest of the ice, and is poised and composed in all phases when he gets a puck in his end. He is able to work out with smart passes or carry the mail with top acceleration. Good in his own end, and although not overly big framed, he has the stamina to compete all game long.
Kylington has been compared favorably to fellow Swedish defenseman Erik Karlsson. I have Kylington as the number 7 prospect, but like him a lot and could see him even pushing Hanifin at number 3 overall, depending on how the World Juniors go.
As an update to this article, Kylington had an awful year. He was injured and did not play at the World Juniors. He then did not have a good rest of the season as was expected. Still I have Kylington as my number 14 prospect going into the draft.
