What Makes Shooting Games So Popular?

There is plenty of controversy surrounding shooting games - Duke Nukem was attributed for a shootout in a film while countless others are accused of poisoning the minds of youths and making them prone to take part in firearm offense. In spite of the controversy yet, they remain one of the most famous genres with only driving games and fighting games coming anywhere near to toppling them. Even those games which are generally focused on exploration (including Tomb Raider) or theft (including Grand Theft Auto) frequently still have components of shooting in them.

So what's it that makes them so appealing to young people? Well really, it is not in any way a new phenomenon and it may be located just as promptly in other genres. Shoot pictures - the action genre is undoubtedly the most popular with all of the big budget summer hits falling into that group. Nearly each and every one of these movies calls for firearms and may be described as 'shooting pictures' and actually computer games are not any different.

The goal of a computer game, like most other amusement, is escapism. Those who play computer games need to feel great and have adventuresome lives. They would like to mimic their superhero idols, be space heroes from the future, attempt being a policeman in a dangerous section of town, or being on the different side of the law... they would like to be pirates, soldiers, and rebels without a cause. In a nutshell, it is a lot more exciting to walk casually out of an explosion using a shotgun over your shoulder than it's to be a school teacher or learn knitting patterns. And why is that? As you can perform those latter things in real life! If the games would like to remain realistic then they should call for firearms. The other motive that is more exciting clearly is the higher stakes - if it is an issue of life or death afterward that is more interesting than winning a gold or silver medal... and firearms definitely ease this. In short shooting games enable a player to feel 'great', feel like they are participating in an action film, feel a rush of adrenaline, and experience something they have never experienced before while staying reasonably naturalistic.
